As you probably already know, there are a number of different kinds of cartridge heaters depending primarily upon your intended use and the environment where they will be utilized. Thus, it is vital that you choose the correct one for your needs since the wrong type can adversely affect your business and even the safety of your workers. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a cartridge heater that you may find useful.
Know the specifications of the heater you need. These include:
- Overall Length
- Unheated length
- Lead Length
- Lead Type (if different than standard)
- Additional performance options or end products (ex. Moisture resistance, anti-seize coating, flange, etc.)
Determine the kind of physical environment in which it will be used.
How will the heater you use be mounted in relation to materials that it may be in direct contact with? If it is mounted near dissimilar materials such as aluminum or brass some leakage could occur. You will also have to know whether or not the heater will be exposed to contaminants. Choosing the right cartridge is critical so that you can avoid spending downtime repairing or replacing the mechanism.
Know the temperatures you unit will be exposed to.
Naturally, knowing what degree of heat your cartridge will be exposed to will determine the type of sheathing you will need. Some units are sheathed with 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel. Others are sheathed with a super-alloy known as Incoloy®. This will not only determine how your machinery will function, it will also determine the lifespan of your heater.
We would venture to say that most people have no idea what a cartridge is let alone how one works. That’s fine. We understand that. It just seems funny to us that so many people are clueless about a device that plays such a vital role in food production facilities, chemical engineering plants, fuel cells, extrusion machines, die casting operations and numerous other sectors. We have coil heaters that are suitable for all kinds of machinery and for many different applications. Just be sure that you select the right product. We can also help you there as well. We have a Watlow cartridge heater than can be used in many industries.
