What is a thermocouple?

Thermocouples provide a method of temperature sensing. By physically attaching two different metals on end of the thermocouple, the junction between the two metals produces a certain voltage at specific temperatures when it is heated or cooled.  This voltage output from the thermocouple can be translated to a temperature measurement for the temperature controller to use for regulating the process temperature.

When specifying a thermocouple you need to know the following information:

  • Hot Junction Type
  • Sheath Material
  • Hot End Style that hooks up to your process
  • Calibration Type
  • Cold End Style that connects to your temperature controller
  • Lead Protection and Length–think of your thermocouple’s process environment
